What are the side effects with copper IUD?

Spørsmål

Hello! I am asking for advice in terms of contraception. I am currently on Desirett, and have been on it for the past 2 years (can not take estrogen-based pills as I suffer from bad migraines). I feel like the pill got me slightly more tired than I used to be, but it's getting hard to tell as I have been taking it for so long. Lately, I have been feeling the need of getting off hormonal contraception. Hence, I was considering the copper IUD as an alternative. I would like to get some advice on the matter, especially regarding possible side effects. My cycle was (I am not menstruating since 2 years) quite regular (max -1 week variation), and I guess not too intense in terms of bleeding (hard to tell though, I would not know how to compare it). What would your advice be? Thank you so much for your help!

Hei

Copper IUD could be a good alternative if you want contraseptives without hormones. The copper spiral is inserted into the uterus and affects the sperm so they are unable to fertilize the egg.

Advantages of the copper UID

  • prevents pregnancy for up to 5 years.
  • more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy and one of the most effective methods of birth control
  • Since there are no hormones in the copper, you will have a regular menstrual cycle.

Disadvantages of the Copper IUD

  • Small bleeding between periods for the first months
  • longer periods and more bleeding.
  • more cramps during periods

You can inserte the copper IUD at your GP or gynecologist. It can be uncomfortable or painful and you may experience cramping or light bleeding after the insert. This is typically short-lasting and can normally be resolved with Ibux or Naproxen.

To find the right contraseptives for you i would advice you to book an appointement with you GP or check out if your campus offers counseling with public health nurses.
